Brilliantly produced on a Tascam 38 8-track (I still own a Tascam 234 4-track myself!), this is more garage than garage, more subterranean than any basement band, and so much so you can practically smell the moldy carpets and hear the whirring white noise of the dehumidifier. Giving D.I.Y. a new meaning, along with the epic artwork, the insert is all handwritten by Phil, the b&w photographs taken by the band members themselves.
And, The Yobs U.S.A. are NOT to be confused with the Yobs from the U.K., who do horrible Punk versions of Christmas songs! Haha! It's been years of searching the net for any reference to this band and album, with the U.K. group the only sad result. The other day I was looking at the back cover and was reminded that the record was put out by Positive Force Records, and lo and behold, Google the label and I get a Discogs entry. It includes a tiny reproduction of the album cover, not even hinting at the brilliance of the artwork and packaging...I'm not terribly impressed with my own photos of the cover either, included here, but it's a step in the right direction for preserving this amazing artwork.
Positive Force Records was in fact a quintessential 80's Punk Rock label, run by Kevin Seconds of 7 Seconds. Based in Reno, Nevada, I can only assume that The Yobs were also from Reno. On the roster were 7 Seconds, Outcry, Verbal Assault, Pagan Babies, Screaming Broccoli, and others. I look forward to getting to know some of the bands on Positive Force, meanwhile The Yobs themselves mentioned their friendship with bands such as Third Class, Expelled, Criminal Mischief, No Deal, Public Nuisance Philharmonic, E-13, Urban Assault, and of course, 7 Seconds.
Update : More search results for The Yobs have surfaced just after time of press. As it turns out, The Yobs were from Carson City, Nevada. Used copies of the album are in fact available on a number of sites, but the most interesting development has been the discovery of a Yobs Facebook Page. A lot has happened since my previous searches! This remains, however, the only site featuring audio streaming of "The Wild Hunt" to the best of my knowledge. I have contacted the band on Facebook and... Streaming the album has been approved! - Vile
The tunes really are classic; "Immortality" opens up with a catchy Rock 'n' Roll hook and the best clave and maraca playing ever performed. "Crimes", depraved and brutal, gets straight to the point! "It's a sign of the times/Our leaders are blind/Throw them away if they're deaf, dumb, or blind/AIN'T IT A CRIME." "Livin' In The Future" provides an infectious groove that is simultaneously crushing Punk Rock, further upping the ante in the atmosphere of deceit, corruption, and sleazery. Unbelievable greatness is achieved with "Glorious Revolution - A Battle Hymn", which is a Punk version of "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic" ("Don't you let the government screw you/That's all they're ever gonna do - to you/ And don't - you let no school, fool you/The Revolution's on"). Hilarious! Meanwhile "Toxic Age" is perhaps the most powerful track, dealing with toxic pollution at Times Beach and the sudden evacuations which were necessary to shield residents from dioxin contamination. And "Gimme" has got the greatest Punk Rock retch/puke/vomit scream I have ever heard. All tracks stand up to the test of time and are insanely Rawkin' years later.
Because this record is at present and to the best of my knowledge, out of print and very difficult to find, I'm making it available here. Scroll down and you'll find an audio player for each song. Can't afford to let greatness like this fall by the wayside - that would be a real shame. The Yobs may be gone, but they are not forgotten! "Don't you let the government screw you!!!"
