Whether it be Norwegian, Swedish, or Canadian Black Metal, Wolven Ancestry is at the the top of the game. It’s easy to say that they have mastered the art of Black Metal, but they have accomplished so much more than that. The Satanic thing was a good springboard for the initiation of the BM aesthetic, but it will never be an end in itself. Uncompromising rebellion and rejection of society led to a deeper comprehension of the purpose behind this genre, and folk melodies and themes, the drawing upon ancient mythology, and further philosophical and spiritual expression made it an enduring movement. Wolven Ancestry bring this direction to an unexpected plateau with “The Wrath of Gaia”. With fierce pagan and ecological values, the band brings forth not only a “message,” but a spiritual journey on their debut CD. They are not only proudly BM but proudly Canadian, flying a Canadian flag during their stage shows – in Black!
The songs carry long, weighty titles that are different than most Metal song titles of this type – they’re relevant, they give you a far better understanding of the band and its music, and – they make sense! “And Gaia’s Wrath of a Thousand Forms of Vehement Torture Will Be Brought Upon Ourselves, The Self-Destructing Human”, is a good opening statement, following the instrumental introduction “Eternal Winds of Nativity”. “The Self-Destructing Human” is a powerful concept Wolven uses with the intent of pursuing instead a communion with “A Bloodline of Immortal Passion Bestowed the Harmony of Man and Wolf”, befitting as the closing statement and final song of the album. So yes, “The Wrath of Gaia” takes the listener on a spiritual journey, step by step, like the great ancient storytellers of old.
“The Paralyzing Human Fear of All Which is Essential to the Cyclical Nature of Earthen Prosperity” will undoubtedly be the “hit single” (! ) of the album, containing a very immediate, vicious BM riff with a brutal percussive blast and a sickening, disorienting keyboard effect. There is ample variation throughout this tale of the Wolven Earth, with atmospheric instrumental passages, folk melodic themes, cold, freezing BM hyperblasts, doom-laden dirges of epic grimness, and triumphant campaigns of pagan revenge. For all lovers of BM and indeed all Metal, there is killer riff upon killer riff here to keep your fists pumping and heads banging, horns up all the way. But as I’ve been saying, there’s even more to this unbeatable package than that. The depth of Wolven Ancesty’s music and the fascination of its concepts will have you appreciating “The Wrath of Gaia” for years to come.
While listening I caught the same undeniable grimness as I do from listening to BM masters Dark Throne, and I have never gotten this effect from a band other than the Throne itself. The true BM energy…Is a rare beast indeed. Whereas Dark Throne seem to evoke cold blackness, Wolven Ancestry seem to evoke cold whiteness! The whiteness of the snow on a subzero day in the Canadian north, or under the twilight cover of a raging blizzard. Every note seems to cut the skin like a blast of frozen wind on a winter landscape. Frostbite is an ever-present possibility...
“Soon Enough the Capitarmageddon Will Arrive, And With Death Will Come New Life” is another favourite of mine, whereas each song is of equal worth and importance to the journey that is “The Wrath of Gaia”, having its own unique function as part of the whole…. There is no getting bored with this album, due to its great variety and cohesiveness. Known to evoke the Wolven spirit with real animal head dresses and psychotically-spiked broadswords in a highly ritualistic manner on stage, perhaps the way to complete the experience after familiarizing yourself with this great CD is to go to one of Wolven Ancestry’s shows!
