A 3-song E.P. and prior release to their debut full-length, "We Are Jackie Treehorn". The Vancouver Hard Funksters intimate some of the fun of their sweaty live performances on the sassily-titled "Call Me (Greatest Hits Vol. 1)", though the best thing is to be there! A band infected by the infectiousness of irresistible funky grooves, JTH is headed up by lead and harmony vocals from Chelsea Kathleen Burden and Ashley Robyn Slater, supplemented by lead and harmony vocals from the male members of the band.
Opening track "Paint A Pretty Picture" is a delightfully idolatrous tune with a demented preacher-style, guttural lead vocal from saxophonist Lorick Russow. In fact, the entire song could be described as "delightfully demented," (ie., I LIKE IT, I LIKE IT A LOT!). "Brain Juices" follows with a Funked-out dancefloor seduction theme and some hot vocal trade-offs between Ashley and keyboard player Adam Kerby. Ashley's sexed-out rap in the mid-section is bound to get anyone's attention as well as the bedroom moaning of Chelsea Kathleen. "Better Get To Livin'" closes the set with a hard-driving Funk-Blues shakedown...A strikingly insightful tune with some badass guitar licks in the trade-off section from Kevin Sanders and a rich Aretha Franklin-esque vocal from Ashley in the mid-section. Chelsea and Ashley perform a classic descending vocal progression near its close, resolving the song in style.
The rhythm section of Geoffrey Leathwood on bass and Derek Van Deursen on drums nail down the proceedings in a Heavy Funk fervour and JTH prove themselves to be a band full of Soul and get-down funkiness. I look forward to reviewing their debut full-length "We Are Jackie Treehorn" in the near future.
